PAKPAC Meeting with the American Red Cross

The Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee (PAKPAC) President, Dr. Saud Anwar coordinated a meeting of the American Red Cross with the other larger American-Muslim organizations to join in and develop a better understanding with members of the community with the American Red Cross with respect to increasing the number of volunteers of the community within Red Cross.

There was also a clear planning to help identify ways of increasing volunteers for blood donations from the American-Muslim community and also become part of bone marrow registries across the country

Travel to Pakistan & Your Life Insurance & what you can do

Did you know that if you have recently traveled to Pakistan or are planning to travel to Pakistan, some insurance companies may not be willing to give you life insurance policy.

PAKPAC has been able to change this law in Connecticut.  You too can change the law in your state to be treated fairly based on data rather than perceptions.

PAKPAC supports the initiative at the Federal level to not allowing the life insurance to be denied based on travel.
Please call your Members of Congress and ask them to  coordinate Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Florida) who is spearheading the campaign for federal legislation.

The U.S. Congress is actively considering legislation to establish Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in Pakistan and Afghanistan that will significantly reinforce the Pakistani government's strategy to counter the insurgency.  Under the ROZ strategy, a significant number of goods including some textiles, manufactured or grown in designated sites (the ROZs) in Pakistan 's border area with Afghanistan , as well as in Afghanistan , will be able to enter the U.S. market duty-free.

PAKPAC's Call to community to be better organized:

Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee asks the Pakistani American community organizations leadership to develop strategies for better organizing itself. Time has come and past for us to be organized. We need to wait no longer. There is a nee to develop mechanisms for a nationwide coordination. We need to organize our organizations. This can occurs as a Federation of Pakistani Americans Groups or a set up of Nor Resident Pakistanis group. The model of everyone doing everything is not sustainable. Developments of organizations skills for specific roles is needed. The community needs to function as a functional body with different organs and specialists doing specific functions but working on coordination with each other... READ MORE

PAKPAC Statement on President Musharraf's Resignation

The Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee (PAKPAC) welcomes President Pervez Musharraf's decision to step down as the President of Pakistan. This decision brings about a peaceful end to the political chaos of the past few months in Pakistan.  We commend President Musharraf in making this difficult choice and saving the people of Pakistan and the elected political government from focusing on impeachment process and the political wind falls and partisanship associated with it.

PAKPAC acknowledges the critical and difficult decisions made by President Musharraf in 2001 immediately post September 11th attacks in the US. His role at that time has helped bring about a better understanding to the international community on the need of investment in the education and health care and infrastructure of Pakistan. For some of his decisions he has remained one of the top targets of the extremist groups in Pakistan.

President Musharraf served as a strong President for Pakistan, but we hope for establishment of strong institutions rather than strong individuals, which we believe are a key to strong and lasting democracy for Pakistan.

This move should leave the Pakistani civilian government to focus their efforts in fighting current economic and energy crisis; enhancing the quality of life of Pakistanis; strengthening the judiciary and democratic institutions, reforming law enforcement agencies and improving security conditions; and combating terrorism and extremism.

Pakistan clearly is going through a very important era in its history and this also a time of great opportunity to focus on ways and means to work on improving the future of the people of Pakistan. We hope and pray for the stability and unity in Pakistan.

PAKPAC statement of the afia siddiqui case

The Pakistani-American Public Affairs Committee(PAKPAC) has been following Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s case for sometime. We have been in communication with various community activists, leaders and organizations to discuss their understanding of her case.

It is noted that there has been a lot of information that is available from various media outlets. It is our understanding that all the facts surrounding this case have not been fully disclosed. We feel that while more credible information with regard to this case is still awaited, at the moment its presumptuous at best to arrive at any conclusion with the information on hand .......MORE

YOUR PROPOSED LETTER:

Name of your Member of Congress
Honorable Congressman

The Government of Pakistan has recently decided to stop funding the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) due to financial constraints. The NCHD is a public-private partnership formed in 2002 to engage in educational and healthcare capacity building on a grassroots level. The NCHD which reportedly employs over 80,000 people has received prestigious awards from various international agencies and has been credited with enrolling 8 million children in schools and train 12 million women in primary healthcare assistance. The defunding of the NCHD has led to protests in Pakistan.

Accordingly, we request you to sign on to the letter initiated by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Congressman Dan Burton below urging Prime Minister Gilani and his parliamentary colleagues to reverse their decision to defund the NCHD. To sign on, please contact either Yohannes Tsehai (Yohannes.Tsehai@mail.house.gov) (202 225 3816) at Congresswoman Shiela Jackon Lee’s office or Brian Fauls (Brian.Fauls2@mail.house.gov) (202 225 2276) at Congressman Dan Burton’s office as soon as possible.
